This weekend we took our visitor Kate and headed to Salcedo Market. This market is open every Saturday in a park in Makati and it was at the top of Randy’s list of things he wants to check out in Manila. I actually don’t know how long this list is- I should probably ask him.
I’ve been to my share of Asian markets and I was picturing this:
Bangkok – 2008
I even debated carrying Adam in the baby carrier. This would have meant both Adam and I would have been really HOT since it’s really a cold weather mode of transport with not much room for a breeze and not really made for a 90 degree day and 70% humidity. But I thought it might be easier than attempting to push his stroller around a crowded market. Luckily I opted for the stroller.
We pulled up and I saw a small, organized, not crowded market located in a beautiful park surrounded by sky scrapers. You could have been in a park in Manhattan. Except for the fact that when you walked around you saw this:
and this:
Being Greek I have seen all sorts of animals being roasted on a spit but this was my first cow. Also for those curious, a pritchon is a whole pig that’s been deep fried…because bacon is just too healthy.
That being said the food actually all looked really good. Kate, Adam and I of course were just not ready to dive into market food so we had some yummy roasted corn. Randy had an empanada that was delicious. Next time (and there will definitely be a next time) I’m going to try something more exciting. They had some delicious roasted meats and fish that smelled and looked really good.
This place was small but had everything. They had fresh herbs that smelled amazing! Rosemary, thyme, mint- none of which my local supermarket carries. I bought a bunch and I am going to try to cook something tasty this week. There were plants, spices, baskets and more!
Adam even got to see some animals…well these fish were still alive. Does that count?
And here is Adam trying to convince his dad that he needs that Buko pie (young cocunut custard pie!).
I have a feeling the Ali family will be making this market a regular weekend haunt.
