Kinder

Adam has had an amazing kindergarten year. I can’t believe Adam is already done with kindergarten and moving on to first grade! That’s like a real elementary student. He started ISM a little nervous as we all did, not knowing what would happen. The first time I put Adam on the bus I was so nervous and not sure he would come back, but he wasn’t nervous at all. He was so ready to be a kindergartner and spent the year growing and learning. He learned how to read, add and subtract numbers, be kind to friends, deal with friends who aren’t always nice to everyone, help others when they need it, be outspoken during circle time, express yourself, do a handstand, share the fun days with Malcolm and be gracious and excited when Malcolm joined, tell his friends and teachers all about the new baby in the house, rock climb, participate in PE, music and art, and to be a fabulous student- although he already had that down pat.
Adam’s report card was full of the sweetest things, here are some snippets-  “Adam has had a great year in kindergarten. He has shown himself to be a caring friend and a curious and self-directed learner. He has proven very diplomatic in helping peers with conflicts and had contributed many ideas to enrich the learning in the classroom. He is able to reflect on past experiences and articulate what he has learned from them. Adam demonstrates great confidence in social situations and continues to develop his ability to persevere and follow through on his many ideas.”
Here are some highlights from his year.
First day on the bus

With his whole class.
Adam’s words (Mira’s not pictured because she was born 12 days after Adam started school and this picture was brought in the first week but written two weeks later, when I in fact did work for the baby).
Cuddles from my kindergartner
Every Friday morning Adam’s class had reading with parents. I was really lucky to be able to make every single one this year. Sometimes he sat on my lap and sometimes his friends did, sometimes he read with his teacher and sometimes he read to me but I loved every minute of seeing him in his classroom and learning all about what he was doing in there.

Every Friday before reading with parents, Adam would run off to the play in the playground and leave me to hang out. He’s lucky he’s so cute! Here we are week three when Miral was keeping me up loads, good thing she’s so cute.

oh and three cafeterias and a cafe and they don’t sell water anywhere at ISM….some lucky days I would remember to bring water (nothing like a thirsty nursing mom with no water to drink)

Adam’s class would make their own books. His contribution were always about iphones and minecraft, neither of which he has!
Every week Adam would bring home books to practice his reading- here is the first book he read to us all by himself!
Adam and his classmates deconstructing stuff

Adam spent lots of time writing books and learning all about how to write a successful book, New York Times Bestseller list here we come.

Adam’s school has the best library. Every Friday I would take both boys to pick out 5 books each. We would stop at the cafeteria for some chicken nuggets on the way and then head to the library to check out some library books. Both boys loved this Friday activity! I’m very lucky that I’ve been able to work from home on Fridays this year, so I can go to reading with parents in the morning and the library in the afternoon and cram all my work in between.

Adam’s student led conference, he reviewed himself very well 🙂

Oh this paper mache pepper, Adam talked about this pepper for weeks and couldn’t wait for open house to show me and to bring it home…somewhere between leaving school and getting home it was misplaced, the poor pepper. Let’s not mention the pepper to Adam please…

Adam’s self portrait for student led conference with his dream spiky hair.

All accurate
There was a special Kindergarten concert with awesome songs!

Adam’s last day of school!

Malcolm loved walking Adam to the bus, he would pop on and say hi to everyone before the bus left.

His class decided to have a rock party for the end of the year. Adam was SO excited! He spiked his hair and chose his coolest outfit.

The whole school year Adam loved having Malcolm come visit him at school and invited him to everything.

The Flaming Firebombs!

For the last day of school Adam’s best friends Victoria and Devon slept over. It was bittersweet since Victoria moved back to the US a few weeks later. Victoria was Adam’s first friend in Manila when we moved here 5 years ago. It was pretty fitting his first sleepover party was with his first two friends. Look how these two cuties slept!

First Grade here we come!

40/52 – Mother's Day Edition

Week 40- This week was your first Mother’s Day. It was my sixth as a mother and so sweet to have my three wonderful children. The boys made me beautiful cards and presents. Adam sewed me a purse in my favorite color, grey, and even put a zipper on it. He made me a key-chain and a super cute book. Malcolm planted me a chili plant but then decided he wanted to keep it. You gave me some drooley kisses and daddy sent me some beautiful roses all the way from Pakistan! Thank you Grandma Yuyu for helping to get them!

My best present was spending the day with you all and getting some super cute pics of my three wonderful children. I could never imagine I would ever be so lucky to be the mother of you three!

Adam prepared a book for me. Some of it was accurate.

I am nice and according to Adam beautiful!

I do like zucchini…but it’s not my favorite food. My favorite drink probably is coka-cola. but it may be tied with wine.

My favorite thing to do is hang out and watch tv…but I only do this at night when the kids are asleep. So I am not entirely sure how Adam knows this! Maybe because it’s his favorite activity?

This one is accurate, it is funny when I’m happy.

Also very accurate!

More tv…

I would say this is accurate, Randy would disagree.

….

Here is Malcolm’s chili plant that he refuses to share.

39/52

Week 39- Grandma Yuyu had one more week to spend with you. She took you for more walks and played with you tons. She got to see you start standing all by yourself from seated without holding onto anything. You pull yourself up these days every chance you get. You love to stand and you also love to feed yourself. At the end of the week we had to say bye to Grandma but hopefully she comes back soon! Next time Grandma comes you will be walking all over the place!

38/52

Week 38- Grandma is here! Grandma arrived to see us and spend time with us! She was so excited to see how much you had grown and all the new things you can do! She took you for long walks every morning that you both loved! She loved all the hugs and cuddles you gave her. You guys went to park to draw with chalk and to the ice-cream shop. You showed Grandma how you wave bye and crawl super fast and insist on feeding yourself! Just a few months ago when you last saw Grandma you were just learning to lift your head! So much changes in just a few months!

365 Days

The good news is that we are a third done with our year without Randy. The bad news is we still have two-thirds to go.
No way I would have made it this far without the good friends in my life. I have never had such a strong community of women around me and these women are helping me through this year one day at a time. I’ve learned the value of having a support system. Women who send me flowers on Valentines day so I don’t feel so alone. Women who have me over for brunch and share the day with me and my kids so I’m not alone even though that means they have to cook on their day. Women who laugh at your off color jokes about your husband getting the speakers in the separation and get that sometimes it’s easier to laugh at these things. Women who come to drink with you a Saturday because they know you just need some company. Women who take your baby at a party or send their older kids to play with yours to give you a break. Women who invite you out over and over even though you say no lots of the time, but get that you just want to be invited.
This year has forever made me realize the importance of women. I hope that I can be that person for someone else going forward. I hope that next year I see that woman who needs someone to talk to or grab a drink with or needs someone to make them feel special. I hope I am able to be half as helpful as these women have been for me.

Grandma Yuyu

There is nothing I love more than visitors who come all of a sudden! It’s my favorite. I don’t have to wait months and months to see them, immediate gratification. When Grandma Yuyu said she might visit and it would be in a few weeks we were very excited! We made signs and waited for Grandma to arrive. Having Grandma there was amazing! She took the kids somewhere every day and it was so nice having another adult in the house and help with the kids. The kids were in heaven! Grandma took Miral for a long walk every day which she LOVED! and then when the boys got home from school Grandma took them somewhere fun! Grandma we miss you!

37/52

Week 37-You are growing and growing every week. You are waving goodbye and crawling so fast! You’re mostly interested in chewing on things. Adam has gotten so good at reading and he loves reading you books but you are mostly interested in eating them. The boys love picking books for you! I love hearing Adam reading you books that just a few years ago I was reading to him! I hope you love books as much as your brothers!

36/52

Week 36- You are starting to play so much more with toys and you always want to be playing with your brother’s toys not your boring baby toys. You are also starting to crawl very fast! Before I know it you’re on the move trying to get near Adam and Malcolm. They don’t yet appreciate having you ‘help’ them build something  (meaning you knock it down) or ‘reading’ a book with them (meaning you try to crumple the page) but they will. I think you are going to fit right in around here and love playing with your two brothers.

36/52 and 8 months

Week 36- you’re 8 months old! Wow, that went fast! You are officially pulling yourself up EVERYWHERE. I’m always surprised to come into your room when you wake up from a nap and see you standing in your crib smiling at me. You had a checkup and you weigh 18 and a half pounds!11 pounds more than your birth weight. You are such a happy loving baby, and on the move. You can get to what you want in the blink of an eye and boy do you know what you want! You see something from across the room and are off to get it quick as you can! And if something gets in your way boy are you not happy, you just don’t understand why mommy won’t let you near marble run or legos.  When Adam or Malcolm enter a room or looks at you or talks to you you light up! You LOVE when anyone sings to you but especially love when Malcolm sings Twinkle Twinkle little star. Your favorite song from me is Wheels on the Bus, you sit still and will listen to every word.  It might be the only time you aren’t on the move. You love to feed yourself and to eat our food. You officially refuse to eat baby pureed food. So you eat what we eat. I love that you are so strong and already have an opinion even if it means i get some food thrown at me sometimes. Your favorites so far are lamb, carrots, watermelon and grapes oh and pizza crusts. You really love our homemade pizza crusts.

35/52

Week 35- The weather is finally warm, summer is here! And that means pool every weekend for you. You LOVE the pool and the water. You could stay in forever. You also are waving bye-bye and continuing on with your crawling faster and faster. You are still obsessed with your big brothers and want to be everywhere they are. You are eating lots of stuff but only if you can feed yourself! You want to eat what we are eating and insist loudly at the table that we share with you. You also get SO excited when I get home from work. It makes me feel like a superstar. You get super excited and squeal and even start waving your arms around until I pick you up. I always go to the bathroom to wash my hands first and you come crawling in at top speed ready to be cuddled. It makes my heart melt every time!
