Hong Kong Walking Tour

As part of Randy’s birthday extravaganza we signed up for a China Town walking food tour. We were lucky and it was the same weekend that Kate was visiting.  We left the babies at home and took Adam with us.

Are you wondering what we were wondering? How is Manila China town going to impress Kate who lives in Hong Kong, the dumpling capitol of the world.  We had our doubts.  But you know what, Manila held its own!

We started out at a little hole in the wall that made the best vegetable rolls.  We were a little nervous to bring Adam, but he really has reached the age where his presence adds to fun. Such wit on this little guy!  Even after three hours of the tour Adam was still in a great mood!

The tour took us to areas of Chinatown that we would have been nervous to eat at.  We had the best spring rolls we’ve had in Manila.

Adam’s favorite was this mango tapioca dish. This was after he had four spring rolls.  He slurped down the entire bowl in about five minutes fast!

Here is our host for the tour.  He did a great job…until we got here. The usual dessert place was closed so we instead we were convinced to try some picked ginger,  and other stuff that I probably will not be trying again.

But we will be going back for some more dumplings!

Don't stop believing

We had a busy week last week. Lately I feel like every week is a busy week…maybe we just have a busy life?  I had an overnight offsite for work at a nearby hotel and as we are in the Philippines, the night activities of course included Karaoke (and thankfully wine). As a birthday treat we sang some Journey for our boss and our AV team put tpgether this little treat.  Made me think maybe I should die my hair red?
When I got home I had an extra special treat waiting for me!
Yes, there were yummy slow cooked tacos but the real treat was that Kate and George came to visit us from Hong Kong! The first night of their visit we had a yummy dinner and put the boys to bed followed by some in house spa treatments together with some wine and a movie. It’s always such a treat to catch up with Kate and to get mani, pedis and massage at the same time was perfect!
The next morning was spent playing with the boys and taking a long walk.  We squeezed in some tanning time while the boys napped and then took them all down for a swim when they woke up.
Both babies are obsessed wtih Adam, who is in turn obsessed with George’s hair. Don’t worry Adam, Malcolm will have hair one day too!

We put the younger boys to bed and left Adam to watch some Clifford before bed and headed out to a yummy Tapas dinner.  Our friends took usto this restaurant Las Ramblas a couple weeks ago and we’ve been obsessed with it ever since. It’s owned by a Spanish chef who makes the best Tapas.  Once again the tradition continues of Kate and I taking only one not so great picture the whole visit.

See Randy’s spoon? On this spoon is what may look like a regular olive but it’s actually a delicious olive paste surrounding an inside of yummy feta that melts in your mouth.  Photobomber is the chef/owner.

The next day we spent lots of time playing with all the boys.  Malcolm even got to eat some of George’s Yumyums.  He was a fan, despite this face.

Then these two mischievous boys got into the tissue box. I didn’t even stop them. It was jsut too cute to stop (I did pull out the tissue pieces from Malcolm’s mouth when he tried to eat it).

For dinner we all combined forces and split watching the three kids and cooking dinner. We must have mentioend ten times how crazy it must be to have three kids and cook dinner with one person (Megan we’re talking about you!). Here the ratio was one to one and it was still a zoo at times!  Kate did the bulk of the cooking and made us a delicious kale salad. I don’t even like kale but this was amazing! Maybe I do like kale Now, if only they would sell kale in Manila for less than 20 USD a bunch 🙂

The next morning we had grand plans to go to a bazaar but Manila had other plans for us.  We took 2/3 of the boys (Adam and George, Malcolm stayed home with Randy) but made it about five minutes into the drive before we hit standstill traffic.  We were really lucky and managed to turn around before we got stuck and headed back home for some cuddles, playing and pool time.

This is old news but still I’ll repeat it. We are SO LUCKY to be so close to Kate and George and to get to see them so much. I never in a million years would have imagined three years when Kate and I said goodbye in London that we would end up halfway across the world, an hour and a half hour flight away from each other! I can already tell that is going to be my favorite part about living this foreign service life. You meet so many people and become very close to a some of these people.  You have to say goodbye but you never know when you paths will run across again and it will feel like you never said goodbye. I consider myself very lucky to have a few very close friends that no matter how far away we are or how long the lapse in between visits or even emails we pick up right where we left off and I still feel as close to them as I did the day I left them.

Happy 34th!

For Randy’s birthday we decided to throw a big old party in our new apartment.  Granted this meant that we would be hosting 30 people 10 days after we moved in. I for sure underestimated the amount of work this would entail.  BUT….it did mean that I worked super hard to organize everything to get the house in shape.  And come Saturday, we were all ready for our party!

We of course forgot to take any pictures of the party but it was a great success! Randy made a yummy cured salmon recipe that Grandma Gretch always makes and delicious slow cooked tacos.  I was in charge of spinach pies and salad. Oh and the cake which I got from Dimpys is our new favorite. Its a super moist, chocolatey, fudgy cake.  Everyone had a great time! Most people left around 11 (we are 34 after all) but a couple friends hung around chatting until late which was loads of fun.

The next morning I let the birthday boy sleep in and woke up with the boys at 5:30.  At least that meant I had plenty of time to decorate, make yummy scones and wrap presents. All this and it wasn’t even 9 yet.

Randy finally woke up around 9 and we ate breakfast, For Adam and Malcolm this was second breakfast since our first breakfast at 6am.

Scone eating twinsies!

Then it was everyone’s favorite time, present opening time.  Adam was super excited about showing Randy where he had signed his card.  When Randy said ‘I wonder what my present is’, Adam proceeded to answer, ‘Headphones’.  I guess we need to work on his secret keeping 🙂

All in all a wonderful day and a great birthday.  We’re very lucky to have Randy in our lives and even luckier that we get to spend every day with him!
In honor of his birthday here are the current top ten reasons why I love him:
  1. His attention to detail in everything from his work, to the boys, to vacation planning.
  2. How quickly he can get either boy to laugh.
  3. When we’re putting Adam to bed and Adam always insists on one more songs Randy always stays behind for that one last song.
  4. He loves popcorn as much as me and Adam.
  5. He voluntarily signed up for a diplomacy seminar at the Embassy and handed in his homework assignment four days early.
  6. Organization is not Randy’s strong suit but when we moved he kept me company the whole time I unpacked and put everything away.
  7. On our drive into work Randy finds interesting podcasts and audible books for us to listen to. Currently we’re listening to New Yorker Fiction Podcasts and Great Course-Scientific Secrets to Raising Kids who Thrive.
  8. When I’m not around Randy listens to a 30 hour Great Courses on classical Bach and the Highbaroque.  This is the sequel to a 48 hour Great Course on How to Listen to and Appreciate Classical Music and a 25 hour course on 30 Great Orchestral Works. And he still finds time to help feed, bath and put the boys to bed.
  9. We’ve off to Phuket this weekend since Grandma Yuyu will be here tomorrow to help watch the boys.  I gave Randy free reign on booking the hotel and he chose the nicest one in town. He says we deserve it and I agree 🙂
  10. When I went shopping with Kate during her visit last weekend, I texted Randy to ask if I should buy some fancy French Sole shoes, fully expecting his reply to be that I was crazy. But his reply was, ‘They’re nice!’

Movin' On Up

You may be wondering where we’ve been lately.

A picture is worth a thousand words so let me show you…

Yup that’s right, we moved.  Our current landlord didn’t want to renew our lease so we had to move. We were a bit bummed about it since we loved our apartment but since it’s not the norm to have to move halfway through your time at a post they felt bad and gave us a really nice apartment. It’s about three blocks away from our old house in a beautiful building with a great pool.  And while we had a beautiful view at our old apartment, it’s 20 floors higher so we have an even better view!
Bur I’m getting ahead of myself, lets start at the beginning.  We both took two days off for the move. The first day this meant we got to hang out with the boys all day while the movers packed up all our stuff.  We even snuck in a little pool time. We were feeling pretty relaxed about the whole thing.
Malcolm and Adam were of course enthralled by the movers and watched them the entire time.

The next morning we woke up and headed to our new apartment so we could tell the movers where to put all our stuff.  When I was growing up we would move ourselves, meaning we would pack up our stuff, rent a Uhaul, lug all our stuff into said Uhaul and then carry all our stuff into our new home. It was EXHAUSTING to say the least.  I feel like I shouldn’t complain since this time movers packed up all our stuff, moved it and unpacked it. But it was still tiring.  I can’t explain why….but it was.
We got Adam a moving in present so he would be excited about our new house.  A helicopter with a moving propeller! This toy had the added bonus of entertaining Adam for a while we were dealing with movers.  We (ok, mostly me) were nervous about how Adam would adjust but he’s been great and loves our new place. It’s bigger so he has more room to run around.

Adam’s bff Victoria came by to see our new house during lunch time and spent some time skipping in circles with Adam. Cultural difference number 160 in the Philippines, lunch breaks here last about two hours, a looong eating session followed by a looong nap.

After A VERY LONG day, we finally had all our stuff moved and the beds and monitors set up, bare bones but that was all we needed!

This was my favorite part about the move, cultural difference number 161.  My clothes were labeled Mam’s clothes and Randy’s clothes were labeled Sir’s clothes.  My favorite is when I’m addressed as Mam here (which is all the time) and because it’s pronounced with a British accent and it sounds like Mum, Adam always thinks everyone is calling me Mom. I’ve had to explain that I am in fact not the mom of the building engineer, the lady at the supermarket or the taxi driver.

So we’ve been here for a week and a half and we finally are almost all settled in.  At first we missed our old place but now that it’s all unpacked and put away we’re able to enjoy how nice it is.
Top three best things about this apartment:
Our view is amazing.  Better pictures to come but from our living room (and the office and our bedroom) we have a view of all of Manila all the way to the Bay and the entire apartment has these walls of windows so you can really enjoy the view.

Randy’s dream has been fulfilled and he finally has an office space.

Our last place had a view to the west and we got to see amazing sunsets. This apartment has windows on both sides. So the living room, office and our bedroom have a view of the west and the amazing sunsets. The boys’ rooms, kitchen and dining room face the east and we get to enjoy some amazing morning light.  This makes those early morning wakeups (why, oh why must my kids rise with the sun…) a little less painful.

In case you’re wondering what Adam is doing here, he’s singing Let it Go at the top of his lungs. He sings like his mommy, loud and out of tune 🙂 Malcolm is trying to eat my Iphone. Typical Ali morning at 6am.

Bedtime

What are we reading these days.  Current favorites are Curious George (despite Adam being scared of monkeys he loves George) and anything Farm related, like Click Clack Moo and Little Blue Truck.
I love how even when we read the same book that we’ve read a hundred times, Adam still notices something new and asks about it.  I also love how when we try to read through a book quickly because we’re ready to get Adam to bed so we can watch House of Cards or Sons of Anarchy, he’ll stop us and say ‘no mommy, talk about it’.  He loooves hearing about things in detail.  I love my little detail oriented boy.
I also love how he also manages to keep stretching out his bedtime.  We’ve gone from taking a bath, reading a book and singing songs to……taking a bath, reading 2-3 books, saying goodnight to everyone- which orinally included Maria, Malcolm and the fish (who has since moved on to greener pastures down our pipe), and now includes saying goodnight to Maria, Malcolm and every picture of Adam in the house with a detailed description of who is in each one, two rounds of Happy Birthday to the current trending item (last night it was the cookies we made for his moving out of the buidling party for his friends at the playground with sprinkles on top- try saying that three times fast) and 3-5 rounds of wheels on the bus. But really, he’s doing us a favor, and making sure we don’t speed through Sons of Anarchy and have nothing to watch, so thank you Adam!
Poor Malcolm has been sick but he is finally today starting to feel better so lots of cuddling and reading on the agenda. Even through a terrible cold and cough he’s still smiling and cooing. Of course he’s no longer sleeping through the night but you can’t deny a sick baby cuddles! His favorite past time is chewing on the books but he’s already on his way to loving books as much as his big brother!

Stilts

We had a three day weekend for Labor Day and decided to drive to the beach for a night.  While the Philippines has many beautiful beaches on islands but we haven’t had much luck with beaches within driving distance of Manila.  But with Monday off and this place Stilts recommended to us we headed off for the night.  We made it the whole two and a half hours in the car with no tears! Although towards the end we had turned into this! We are very lucky, both boys like the car and can go on long car trips with us.  Road trip across the US here we come 🙂

We got there just in time for lunch. Someone wasn’t sure about the food.

1our little hut was very cute.  We all got comfy and then put our bathing suits on.

Look what was next to the pool!  A caribou!

Here’s where things took a turn for the better for me.  Malcolm and I headed back so Malcolm could nap and luckily he fell asleep super quickly which left me time to enjoy this.

I even snuck in a nice long nap.  Adam and Randy came back from the pool and hung out on the hammock and played and read and left us to sleep.  Once Malcolm and I woke up we all showered and got ready for dinner.

We had some time so we took a long walk on the beach.  A beach this beautiful deserves a long walk.

A quick outfit change after someone insisted on washing his cars off in the ocean.

After our long walk we headed up for dinner outside.  The food was pretty good.

Here is where our night away took a turn for the worse.  When we got home after dinner and got ready to go to bed we realized there were bug everywhere.  They quickly moved us to another cabin but for us it was too late.  We stayed the night because we had two tired little boys but were up and out early the next morning.  We did take some time for pictures and cuddles of course.

We headed out and went to Antonios for breakfast on out way home.  It’s the most famous restaurant in Tagatay and it was delicious! Even though it’s an hour away from Manila I’m sure we’ll be back!

The most delicious hot chocolate ever!

Even though this view is through a screen you can still see how beautiful our view was.  We were there really early (thanks to the two early risers we have) and it was nice to be there so early and eat in the fresh air, something that doesn’t happen too often in Manila!

On our way out we found this magazine with my friend Jackie on the cover! Jackie is Devon’s mom and originally from Brooklyn and loads of fun.  She just opened an awesome baby store in Manila and was in Town and Country talking about it! Adam was really excited, actually he was really excited to eat the magazine 🙂

All in all it was nice to get away from Manila for the night and see something different and witness a beautiful sunset.  But we won’t be back to that hotel.  Our search for a hotel within driving distance of Manila continues.

On the Move!

I really feel like these monthly updates happen every week! Time goes by so fast. But that being said from last month to this month Malcolm has changed SO MUCH!
The biggest change is Malcolm is officially a mover.  I guess technically a crawler but it’s more of an upper body dragging, army crawl sort of a move.  But don’t be fooled, he can move and he can move fast! Especially when it’s something he really wants, like any and all of Adam’s toys.
Malcolm is also sleeping through the night! It’s only been two nights and I’m probably jinxing myself by saying anything but after a couple long, long nights Malcolm, which means mommy and Malcolm are sleeping through the night! And he’s currently over 17 pounds! That’s 13 pounds heavier than he was when he was born.
Top five top current reasons I love Malcolm these days are:
1) His super duper chubby cheeks that are so soft to kiss!  Also his super chubby little thighs.
2) He loves toys, all of them! Baby toys, Adam toys, anything he can get his hands on.
3) He loves to smile, even when he’s woken up, sick, tired.  The only time he’s not smiling is when he’s hungry. Do not get in between this boy and his food!
4) He LOVES his brother.  He will watch him anywhere he is. No matter what’s going on when Adam comes over to talk to Malcolm, Malcolm breaks out into a huge smile.
5) Malcolm loves the pool and swimming. He’ll stay in there forever smiling and laughing and splashing.

I couldn’t get a picture of Malcolm laying on the blanket because he kept trying to crawl over and grab the camera!

And one of this cutie who was too busy pretending to be a horse all day to take pictures!

New School

After much discussion we decided to move Adam into the Embassy preschool.  They follow the Montessori model, his good friends (Tyler, Victoria and Noah) also go there, it’s close to our office so we all get to drive in together (and listen to lots and lots Curious George on tape) and he’s on Embassy grounds where it’s secure and the medical office is right next door.  After adding all this and more up we decided this was the right choice.

Everyone was there to send Adam off on his first day.

Look who wanted to take pictures of his first day!

And here is the best shot of the three of us I could get, ah toddlers!

So far it seems we made a great decision.  Adam loves the school, the teachers and his ‘kids’ as he calls his friends.  They send a newsletter every week with the cutest pictures of Adam.  I love seeing what he’s up to in school.
Adam made cookies last week and we made little bags to give his friends at school.  Here is what the teacher emailed us later that day.
Thank you so much for the cookies. 🙂 Before Adam handed the cookies to his friends, we talked about how he made them, who helped him and what ingredients he used. He was just very proud and very happy!

After just a couple of weeks I can see a change in Adam, he’s more patient and observant and wants to know why about everything! When we’re reading a book and there’s a lot going on a page he asks us to ‘Talk about it’.  He wants to know how every animal walks and talks, since they do alot of that at school.  He shows me the yoga and handstands that he learned at school.

In honor of his first day of school, here are my current top five that I love about Adam.

1) Every night we have to sing Happy Birthday before Adam goes to sleep, tonight we sang Happy Birthday to his and Teo’s dinosaurs, yesterday it was to Gregory’s fish and rabbit.  You always know what’s popular in Adam’s word because they’ll get a shout out during Happy Birthday.

2) The past couple night after a couple Happy Birthdays and a couple verses of Wheels on the Bus, Adam cut us off with a ‘Niiiiight’.  After years of trying to convince Adam that it’s time for bed he seems to have finally had enough of my off tune singing.  Randy and I walked out laughing, maybe our days of singing ‘Happy Birthday to the firetruck’ with us elbowing each other at the ridiculousness of what we were doing, are coming to an end.

3) Adam’s now entered the ‘Why’ stage.  He asks Why after everything.  He asked if we were in an elevator the other day and then asked why it was an elevator….very existential of you Adam, but I have no clue!

4) He loves moving his chair over to watch what we’re cooking and he now cooks us pretend cookies.  Then he presents them to us and tells us they’re hot and that we can’t have any until after dinner.

5) He LOVES horses.  Every time we let him pick a little toy at the toy store he chooses a horse, we now have 6…and just this weekend he decided that the bench in our room is his horse gate.  When I asked him what his horse’s name is, he replied ‘Al Capone’.  I should just leave it at that, but I’ll explain, when we went horse back riding back in Baguio (before Greece!) his horse’s name was Al Capone, it must have really made an impression because he remembered it all this time later!

He sits in there and has feed him carrots and hay.  It’s pretty much the cutest thing I’ve ever seen.  I have no idea where he got the idea but he will sit there and eat the imaginary hay out of your hair so gently it makes me want to scoop him up and give him a million kisses.

Smorgasbord

A smorgasbord of pictures of the past couple weeks.  Mostly Iphone pictures, so don’t expect anything fancy.
1. Lots of book reading.
Oh wait, that’s Adam, here’s Malcolm!

2. Celebrating our wonderful nephew/cousin Roman’s fifth birthday beautiful niece Isla’s second birthday from afar but with lots of love!

3. Passing time in traffic during the looong commute home.

4. Adam’s first play, Pinocchio.  He was scared at first and at certain times but overall it was a great experience.  He loved it and we spent a lot of time talking about the differences between plays and movies. It was nice to have a little Adam and parents time as well.  Adam has been so great with Malcolm, attentive, loving and not jealous that it makes it even more special when we get to spend some time to focus on him.

When I asked Adam who he wanted to take pictures with he only wanted pictures with the the cat and the fox (who even knew they were in Pinnochio), but as soon as we squeezed our way up front they were just saying their goodbyes.  Thankfully, Adam just rolled with it and was happy getting hamburgers and ice-cream instead.

5. Malcolm moved out of our room and into his own room! I miss having him right near me but it is nice to be able to read books in our bed again instead of having to quietly sneak in in the dark.  The Arms Reach co-sleeper was amazing and we used it the entire time Malcolm was in our room.

I love when babies reach the stage that they sleep with their butts up in the air.

6. Every day when we get home from work we all spend a half hour on our bed.  All four of us will cuddle and talk and hang out.  It’s my favorite part of the day.

7.  We had two fun dinners with friends at a new restaurant in Manila called Blackbird. Now that Malcolm is older we’ve been going out more with our friends and just us.  It’s been nice to spend time with other adults 🙂
Blackbird is located in Manila’s old airport terminal and is a beautiful building and courtyard.  The food was yummy too.

Our fun dinner companions, my good friends Allison and Jackie, aka Victoria’s and Devon’s mommys.  I’m so lucky to have met such wonderful friends here.  I love them both andI love that our children are such good friends.  Devon and Victoria are Adam’s best friends here.

8. We decided to try Ihop over here.  It was markedly less good than Blackbird, but Adam enjoyed his pancakes.

9.  We took Grandma Gertch or ‘Ama Lerch’ as Adam calls her 🙂 to a local handicrafts store and found this beautiful ‘Kulintang a Kayo’ or Wooden Xylophone.  Adam loves it and we do too.

We also picked up this guy.  We’re actually moving apartments in two weeks (long story but our landlord isn’t renewing our lease so the Embassy is moving us to a nearby building which is also super nice)…so we’ll have to find a new fun place for these two additions in our new home.  For now they’re just handing out in our living room.

10.  This little guy is almost too big for his chair! I know I say this all the time but I can’t believe he’s already this big!

11. These two cuties had a play date. Before we know it they’ll be hand holding and going on dates!

The Last Time

I read this recently and it made me so sad and reminded me to enjoy every cuddle, middle of the night wakening, fight over going poo in the potty, negotiation at bedtime, 5:30 wakeups and everything else that we take for granted.

I see with Adam how quickly times passes and how fast he’s becoming a strong, independent, wonderful little boy.

The Last Time
From the moment you hold your baby in your arms,
you will never be the same.
You might long for the person you were before,
When you had freedom and time,
And nothing in particular to worry about.
You will know tiredness like you never knew it before,
And days will run into days that are exactly the same,
full of feedings and burping,
Nappy changes and crying,
Whining and fighting,
Naps or a lack of naps,
It might seem like a never ending cycle.
But don’t forget,..
There is a last time for everything.
There will come a time when you feed your baby
for the very last time.
They will fall asleep on you after a long day
And it will be the last time you ever hold your
sleeping child.
One day you will carry them on your hip,
then set them down,
And never pick them up that way again.
You will scrub their hair in the bath one night
And from that day on they will want to bathe alone.
They will hold your hand to cross the road,
then never reach for it again,
They will creep into your room at midnight for cuddles ,
And it will be the last night you ever wake to this.
One afternoon you will sing ‘the wheels on the bus’
and do all the actions,
then never sing them that song again.
They will kiss you goodbye at the school gate,
the next day they will ask to walk to the gate alone.

You will read a final bedtime story and wipe your
last dirty face.
They will one day run to you with arms raised,
for the very last time.

The thing is, you won’t even know it’s the last time
Until there are no more times, and even then,
it will take you a while to realise.

So while you are living in these times,
remember there are only so many of them and
when they are gone,
you will yearn for just one more day of them .

                                                                             -Author Unknown

I know there will be a day where these two don’t want to hang out and cuddle on our bed with us…but I hope that day comes a long, long time from now.
