When In Rome

Wherever I go I always like to see the zoo.  Before I even had Adam I’ve dragged Randy to the London zoo, the Genoa aquarium, even the Staten Island Zoo (this was one of our earliest dates).

So now that I have Adam and Grandma is visiting there really isn’t any excuse not to go to the zoo.  Except Randy has warned me over and over that the general consensus is that the Manila zoo is depressing.  So when my friend invited me to the Avilon zoo (also in Manila, but smaller and with a better reputation) I said yes right away and packed Adam and Grandma in the car and off we went.

The Avilon zoo is small but surprisingly chock full of animals.  For the animals rights advocates out there you’re correct, the math doesn’t add up.  The animals are in pretty small areas.  But all in all the zoo was pretty good and Adam was in heaven.  He is in love with ALL animals- no discrimination here.  This includes the beetles in the playground that he insists on bringing up to show mama- thanks Adam, the fish in the aquarium at his school, the fish in the wet market (this one may get awkward soon, since they’re already dead) and any dog he can get his hands on (even the strays).

Right away, before we even paid for our ticket they had small animals for sale, hamsters, rabbits, turtles. Adam picked out a rabbit to bring home.  Ha, just kidding.  I’ll save the rabbit history of my family for another time but lets just say they don’t generally last that long.

The first floor of the zoo has 8 large glass cages, four on each side.  I was expecting to see maybe a small monkey or some small dogs, which they had, but they also had lions, tigers and cheetahs.

Adam loved this sleeping lion.  He’s lately understanding more about when people are sleeping.  When I say shhhh- dada’s sleeping, he puts his little finger on his nose and says shhhhhh.  This has now turned into him turning over his little plastic horse and elephant and saying shhhhh.  When the animals are upside down they’re asleep of course.  Then he suddenly switches them to right side up and make a lot of noise followed by smiles from Adam- this means they’ve woken up of course.  So he really enjoyed this sleeping lion.  He kept putting his little finger on his nose and saying shhhhh.
Adam has also miraculously slept past 7:30 every day this week…maybe he’s learning to appreciate sleep more, please don’t be a fluke!!!

There was also this wild dog which Adam loved of course 🙂

In the middle of the glass cages though was where it was at.  First up, some birds- exciting.

Next up were some carp that you could feed.  This was a BIG hit for Adam.  You threw some food in and fifty carp in the tank went crazy.  Adam LOVED this.  He kept wanting to go back to the fish the whole time.

On the other side of the fish was a snake that Adam wasn’t afraid to pet.  NO fear of animals from this boy.

A little way past the snakes and fish though is where it got very interesting and you realize you are FOR sure not in a western world zoo or any zoo where there is a fear of lawsuits.

First up are the two wild bear cats that hang out on a shelf just out in the open.  You can buy a banana and feed it to them.  One can only hope these bear cats are more cat and less bear.

After the bear cats are these huge fish that you can buy and feed chicken heads to….no pictures of this because I did not partake.  The thought of touching chicken heads and of fish eating them equally grossed me out.

Then the Pièce de résistance.  In the middle of the zoo was sitting a live orangutan.  You ask what is so exciting about that.  When I say just sitting in the middle of the zoo,  I mean just that.  She, her name was Jenny, was on a bench just waiting for hordes of children to come up and sit next to her and take pictures.  This wild animal was just sitting there while child after child came up to her right into her space.  For the first half hour I refused to get near to Jenny, but after enough time I figured, when in Rome.

The smile plastered on my face was pure fear and preparation to throw Adam out of the way if Jenny attacked.  Luckily she was too occupied with Grandma Gretch’s necklace.

It’s hard to follow up an orangutan especially with the petting zoo that followed upstairs, but Adam loved that too and loved feeding the army of gerbils their carrots and the goats their greens.

So, Avilon zoo, I think we will be back.  Although I can’t promise I’ll feed the bear cats, the chicken head eating fish or let the huge birds sit on my shoulder (I think those birds can do more damage than people think) but I think I will let Jenny put her arm around me, because hey how much damage can one 200 pound orangutan do 🙂

The Jordans in Manila

When we left Bali we luckily weren’t faced with the usual leaving vacation blues because the Jordans flew back to Manila with us! We did have Thursday blues when we woke up and the Jordans weren’t here anymore which resulted in this.  Das if of course Aunt Daf, as she forever will be now known 🙂

We all flew back Saturday morning and had the Jordans with us until Thursday.  We had an amazing week.  Everything just fell into place perfectly and the Jordans had a great visit.

There was a lot of this:

Some of this:

And a decent amount of this:

Oh yeah and this:

After hours when Adam was sleeping we had a decent amount of this:

We checked out the new casino in Manila – Solaire.  It was a big hit, so big in fact the boys went back three days later.  Except for the fact that you can smoke inside this casino is pretty great.  It’s clean and organized and has a seven dollar crap table which according to MJ is great.  So we will be bringing anyone who wants here when they come visit us in Manila.

No photos allowed but I snuck this one in (don’t tell anyone)
We had a yummy dinner so we could play craps on a full belly.

And when Randy was at work some of this:

Yummy soup dumplings after a full day of shopping at the Womans Bazaar (the woman’s bazaar is only once a month and the Jordans were lucky enough to be in town that one day).  We picked up Adam’s new tent at the bazaar (which has been a huge success) and some trinkets for the Jordan’s to take home and then headed to Mall of Asia for some yummy soup dumplings.

Here are the Jordan’s top three for Manila.  This of course is taking Adam and us out of the ranking 🙂 And oh yeah we went to the spa while the Jordans were in town.

Mj’s top three:

1) Spa
2) Casino
3) The last place we went to dinner- Stella

Here are the Jordans at Stella

Here are Daf’s top three-

1. Seeing what a great and comfortable apartment you guys have: pool downstairs, washer dryer in the apartment (all the things New Yorkers dream of).
2. Spa
3. Markets (I am Gretchen’s daughter/your sister)

We miss you Aunt Das and Uncle Das 🙂 We are counting the days until we see you again!

Top three Bali with Adam

Now onto the main event, what you’ve all been waiting for, pictures of Adam.

1) My number one in Bali with Adam was watching him interact with his Uncle and Aunt.  He loves them so much and was in heaven the whole week.  There were always two willing happy people to play with him, lift him up, twirl him, give him leg rides and satisfy his every whim.  He was glum for a week when they left but that’s a post for another day.  Not that his mom and dad don’t play with him, but you know how it is.  These two are young and full of energy and hustle.

2) Spending lazy days at the beach and pool with Adam.  At home we always have a busy schedule of play dates and activities so it’s nice to have nothing to do but play in the sand with him and teach him to kick his feet when he’s swimming (well done Randy!)

3) I always love this about travelling so its not specific to Bali but I love seeing Adam’s face as he discovers new things.

This band rolled around every evening around 5 pm.  Just in time for Adam to have some dinner al fresco with some music.  He loved the music.  I need to start playing some dinner music!

Sand, an old favorite.  Still hasn’t lost it’s appeal.

Oh W, you had us at unlimited green apples.

New hiding spots.

Seminyak is a great town to go shopping with a baby, there are animal statues everywhere!

Who knew an airplane magazine could keep a toddler’s interest for 30 minutes.

A bag that wheels in all directions?! Hours of airport fun.

A big bathtub and even a toy frog, success.  Having a bathtub was GREAT! In most of our travels the hotels have showers and if it’s not outside by the pool this boy is not a shower person.  In Bohol I would just bring the soap and clean him in the pool shower.  So yay for bathtubs!

This could have happened anywhere but Adam discovered his nipples in Bali.

This guy got a big hi every morning.

This guy played every day at Laguna and Adam loved it.  We had to get him his own little xylophone to take home.

Not in the top three but worth mentioning was how funny it was to compare how the other half lived.

In the morning the Alis averaged a wakeup of about 6 am. We would get dressed and have some coffee and breakfast. Then we would head out to the pool as some of us were getting stir crazy.

We had time to read the paper.

And play with the squirrels and the squirrel signs, which we loved equally.

Eventually around 11:30 when we were getting ready to eat out lunch and take our AFTERNOON nap, these two would roll up for some breakfast 🙂  Must be nice!

Bali I will miss your beautiful sunsets and can’t wait to come back.  I can say that and mean it now that you are only a four hour flight away 🙂

Top Three Bali without Adam

There are so many reasons why having Maria, our nanny, come with us on vacation is a plus but here are the top three.

1) Being able to read my book by the pool.  This is high on my list.  While I love playing with Adam in the pool and the beach, it is definitely a treat to be able to sit out in the sun and finish my book.  I read Someone Knows my Name by Lawrence Hill in Bali.  It’s the story of Aminata, who was taken out of Africa as a young girl and forced into slavery in the US in the early 1800s and follows her life through most of the century.  I have to say this book was great.  It was written well and still uplifting despite the awful situations the main character is faced with.  When I took this bag out of my suitcase I got worried it might perhaps be a little heavy for beach reading but it ended up being the perfect book to read.

2) Being able to sneak away with Randy for some lunch dates.  We headed into town and grabbed some Greek food.  Not a bad looking lunch date 🙂

We could have been in Greece…except that the only tasty thing was the tzatziki.

We went to a coffee shop across the street after and sat and had coffee and tea and some cookies and talked.  The food and drinks were delicious and made up for our lunch.  Moments like these are so wonderful.  They’re more rare now that we have Adam, to grab a couple hours where it’s just us, but so important and good for us.

3) Getting to go out every night to an adult dinner with Daf and MJ at a dinner time that is not 5 pm.  The food in Bali was great (Greek restaurant aside).  It was so nice to have long yummy meals and get to eat my food hot.  We missed Adam of course but he was sleeping away in his travel crib being looked after by his wonderful nanny.

My favourite meal of the trip was Ku De Ta in Seminyak.  This place could have been in Miami.  It was a beautiful restaurant, modern and with a beautiful deck that led right out to the beach.  In fact I felt like I could have been in Miami a lot when I was in Bali.  Bali is like a cooler, more relaxed, beachier, more beautiful, Buddhist Miami.

There is nothing more I love on vacation than showering after a full day in the sun and getting dressed up for dinner.  My only regret of the trip was only taking Iphone pics at night. If Adam comes with us to dinner it’s the one time he takes his bath before dinner, to wash all that sand off and to get into a cute outfit.  But before you get your hopes up for some cute pics of Adam dressed up for dinner, here is how Adam ate most of his meals in Bali.

The rest of us however showered and prettied up.

This place had the most delicious drinks.

and delicious food.

After dinner we headed out to the deck which was full of candles.  It was a beautiful restaurant.  I would have gone back but I’ve learned never to try that on vacation after Mexico.

Mozaic Beach Club was where we went for our last dinner in Bali and it was definitely a great way to end the trip.  The food was delicious and Aunt Daf was happy they had affordable bubbly.

And I was happy that Aunt Daf was happy.

I had the best vegetable dish of my life here. Ok, it’s actually tied with a vegetable dish I had in Sydney but it’s tied for first.  Every vegetable on this plate was delicious and the tastiest vegetable I’ve ever had (except for that one other time).  I shouldn’t even post this Iphone picture because it takes away from what you’ve imagined this tastiness to be but here it is anyway.

This meal takes second place due to some rogue bats that were flying pretty close to Aunt Daf’s head. Had it been for food alone this place may have taken first.

In third place was the dinner we had at The Warung restaurant at Alila Villas.

The food was pretty good and had some stars like this delicious satay that came out on little coal boxes and a delicious soup.

This tray of starting dips looked great but wasn’t actually that exciting.

But this place take third place for pure beauty.  It was worth going to this hotel just to see the beautiful architecture.  When Randy goes back to corporate law and makes partner we can stay at this 600 dollar a night hotel but for now we’ll just walk around after dinner and take some pictures.

I wish we had gone to this place earlier to take some pictures in the daylight.  There is a deck that goes right out over the ocean which is 300 stairs below you.  The entire hotel was out of movie and the most beautiful hotel I’ve ever seen.

And just so you don’t think we really left Adam at home, some proof that he was in Bali with us.

Eat, Love and Pray in Ubud

We decided to bring Maria, our nanny, to Bali with us.  One of the many benefits of this was that we were able to go to lots of fun dinner with Daf and MJ (more on that later) and we were also able to spend a whole day exploring Ubud.  Ubud was about an hour and a half away from Nusa Dua where we were staying so the three hours in a car, plus trekking around rice terraces, plus the late dinner we had planned meant Adam would have much more fun at home taking a long nap and hanging out by the beach.

It was a great day and wonderful to have the whole time to focus on sightseeing and spending time with Daf and MJ.

Our first stop in Ubud was for a yummy lunch.  We went to Three Monkeys and sat out back by the rice terraces.

My yummy beet salad

After lunch the ladies were allotted two hours of shopping.  We walked around all of Ubud but didn’t see anything to buy.  The irony of having two hours to shop and two willing husbands and finding nothing does not escape me.

We did see lots of these beautiful offerings that are left outside all of the doors in Bali.   They were full of beautiful flowers and food offerings.

and lots and lots of motorcycles.

After shopping we headed out to see the Tegallalang rice terraces.  These are the second largest rice terraces in Bali and were beautiful.

After the rice terraces we headed to the Four Seasons in Ubud.  It had been recommended to us to have a drink there and described as making you feel like you’re in a Bond movie.  This turned out to be a pretty accurate description.  After driving in through a narrow road surrounded by foliage you come across a bridge that goes over a ravine with a river and have to walk down stairs to the lobby.

Once inside you have a beautiful view of a mountain and the river.  We enjoyed some yummy drinks and took in the view.   We of course had to order some martinis in order of 007.

We didn’t know but at sunset every night the four seasons has a band come play traditional Balinese music and dancers come and perform.  It made the drinks all the better!

After drinks we headed off to dinner at a great hotel, the Viceroy.  They gave us a very large table 🙂 but the food was delicious even if we couldn’t share it.

Bali prep

What did I do to get ready for Bali, you ask?

Well, I had to pack all the appropriate clothes.

I had to find the right sun protection and swim gear.

I had to pack all my essentials.

Make sure my swimming was up to snuff.

Then all that was left to do was wait for Aunt Das and Uncle Meej…

Home sweet home

In between Bohol and Bali we were home in Manila for a week.  We decided to relax and take it easy 🙂 Just kidding.

We headed to school.  Lots to do there, painting, water tables, toys galore.  This  class is twice a week for an hour and I go with Adam.  It’s such a great class.  They always have an art project and a sensory project and the teachers are great and just a couple weeks in I can already see what a change in following the structure of the class Adam has already made.  It’s so much fun to see him discover new things and meet new kids.

We had playdates galore.

And our friends Gavin and Kate came to visit us to from Hong Kong.  We shopped, got manis (well Kate and I did) and ate lots of yummy foods.

Oh yeah, and Kate managed to beat Gavin in some basketball even at 5 months pregnant!

Once again Kate left and we have not one picture of us together.  But at least we had a fun two days!  Such a busy month.  Next up, Bali!

Chocolate Hills and Tarsiers

On our fourth day in Bohol we decided to do some sightseeing.  Bohol is famous for their chocolate hills, over a thousand small hills.  We went in rainy season so instead of being chocolate the hills were more green than usual.  It was beautiful and worth the 250 steps we had to climb to see it.

Any guesses what I wished for 🙂
We also saw the tarsiers.  This little guy is one of the world’s smallest primates and pretty cute.  We went to a wildlife preserve so we could see them in their natural habitat instead of a cage and it was great to see them just sitting in the trees.  Adam loved them and spent the rest of the day looking for them in the trees.

Bohol is one of the prettiest islands we’ve been to so far.  The beach was beautiful, the chocolate hills and tarsiers were  so much fun to see and it was so nice to have the week with no agenda besides beach and pool.  Not a bad way to spend fourth of July!
All in all it was a great week!  I leave you with Adam’s first video that he made all by himself.

Bohol

You’ve all been deprived Adam pics long enough! Get ready for more than you can handle 🙂

A couple week ago Randy mentioned he would have to go to Bohol for work on July 2nd.  By some bit of luck the signing ceremony Randy had to attend was moved to the third.  This meant Randy could take the 5th off and we would have a 6 day trip to Bohol!

The plan was to fly in on the 2nd, Adam and I would amuse ourselves while Randy was taken on some work sightseeing events.  The next day Adam and I would attend the signing and see daddy’s speech and then we would all head to the beach for four days of sun.

Small snafu, we booked Adam and I on the 8am flight to Bohol, but by the time Randy’s travel orders were approved that flight was all booked.  He headed out at 6am and Adam and I took our flight alone. We boarded and the seat right next to us was empty.  I kept waiting for someone to board and take that seat. The plane was booked after all, that’s why I was flying alone with a toddler…in the end the seat remained empty along with half the flight.  It was great for Adam to have a seat, not great to have a toddler throw a fit for the last 20 minutes with no one to help me.  Adam’s 12th flight was for sure not his best.  The Ipad was put away for landing and it was downhill from there.

We landed and the tears stopped immediately of course.  Sorry to anyone flying to Bohol on July 2nd at 8am 🙂

We headed off to the Bohol Bee Farm.  That was where Randy and all his colleagues were being put up.  It’s billed as an organic farm but it was actually just ok.  The best part was the view from our room.

Adam and I made the best of it and spent the day napping and by the pool.  We had some French fries and spent some time in the coconut shower.

While we were having fun at the hotel Randy was on a sightseeing extravaganza for work.  He was taken on a rowboat and got to see this.  This is the spirit of the river (or a man covered in mud meant to symbolize the spirit of the river).

The next morning we woke up and had some breakfast and played with some dogs.  There were a lot of dogs at the bee farm.  This wasn’t great since Adam has no fear of any animals and will walk up to any dog and there were too many dogs to be sure they were all friendly.

Then it was back to the room to get ready for the signing we had come to Bohol for.  Randy was giving a speech so we went along to see it.

There were some delays in the signing getting started but luckily there was plenty to keep Adam and I occupied.  There was a beautiful balcony with a glass railing.  These pictures freak me out a bit even knowing there’s a glass wall.

Finally it was time for Randy’s speech.

After Randy’s speech, Adam and I left to go to our new hotel.  It was way past Adam’s nap time and we wanted to go get settled in.  We moved to Amarela Hotel.  It was so much nicer than the Bee Farm.

Adam fell asleep in the car on the way to the hotel and woke up right when we got there. Resulting in a thirty minute nap.  For a boy that normally naps for three hours this is what resulted.

But we all went to bed early and woke up refreshed and ready for the beach!  First some breakfast.  Since we’re on vacation Adam got to have mango shakes and pancakes for breakfast every day! He loves both.  He calls pancakes cake. Except he pronounces it in a way that it rhymes with dock.

Then we headed down to the beach.  The beach was beautiful and we were the only ones on it all day.  In the morning when the tide was in we played by the boats and the hammocks.

In the afternoon the tide went all the way out and we were able to walk all along and look for hermit crabs.

After the beach we would head up to the pool to wash the sand off.  After some French fries Adam would work on his newest skill, jumping into the pool!

May 30th, 2010 – The ending

After dinner we had non stop dancing and drinking for the next 7 hours.  It was AMAZING.  Everyone spent hours on the dance floor.  I loved every minute of it.  It was like being out with all of my best friends dancing and having the best time.

Whenever you needed a break from dancing there was always the photo booth to keep you occupied.  I love the photo booth pictures. I have them all and am still thinking about how I want to display them all.

And if all else failed there was always the bar.  The boys spent a lot of time there.

Then it was time for more dancing.  There was even some Egyptian dancing.  My friend Kate tried to convince me the red belt tied around my waist was a fertility belt.  I was never given a clear answer, but maybe Adam is all the proof we need 🙂

Then even more dancing.

and some shots 🙂

All in, the best weekend of my life and to top if all off I got to leave with the best husband anyone could ever ask for.  And we managed to be the last ones to leave at 5 am, pretty impressive.

My one and only regret of the whole evening was that I was too busy dancing to get to see the dessert table in person.  Randy’s reply was, if your only regret on your wedding is that you were having too much fun to go look at the cakes you know you’re doing something right.  And that’s why I married him 🙂
