Virginia is for Christmas Trees

It’s so exciting that we are in the United States and we can go and pick out our own Christmas tree! This has been my dream! In Manila, we would have to order a fresh tree in August and hope by the time it arrived in late November that it would survive to Christmas. The boys came with us and loved getting to pick out a tree! Uncle Ari who was visiting, which was great and super helpful during this tree adventure.

If Ari hadn’t been there I might have had to settle for one these cute little mini tree.

Malcolm really surprised me and LOVED decorating the tree this year. He put up 80% of the ornaments and loved every minute of it.

He did a great job, the tree looked great!

It was a great weekend with Uncle Ari and Grandma visiting. We even got to see Santa!

This was the closest Miral could get to Santa. She was NOT a fan this year. I loved this Santa, he kept trying to sneak up behind her.

Candy canes!

Maybe Miral was regretting treating Santa so poorly, lol.

Me and the boys even went to a Cirque de Soleil show on ice with our friends Carrie and Carrie and their daughters Simone and Celia.  It was a bit dramatic for Malcolm but by the end he got into it.

Helium and Rock Climbing

A month after we moved to Virginia Adam turned 7! I was worried we wouldn’t know anyone to come to Adam’s birthday, but we already had so many friends to invite! And Grandma Gertch and Uncle Ari came for the party too!
But first Adam’s actual birthday. After years in Manila with no helium I of course made sure that Adam had a bunch of helium balloons. Side note helium balloons last for SO long! For Adam’s 7th birthday we decided to get him a big kid bike! And this bike is so cool I want one for myself.  He loves it!

On our birthdays we pick where we want to have dinner.  Since we’ve moved to the U.S. I’ve ordered Chinese food a few times and the boys LOVE it.  Adam especially loves the fortune cookies.  I’ve also been promising that on his birthday he could have a Coke, so we headed to the Chinese restaurant and ordered soups all around.

Then it was back home for a cake.

For Adam’s birthday party we went to Climb Zone, this cool rock climbing place in Maryland.  He had lots of friends come, some from school, some from Manila and some from when we lived in DC 7 years ago when he was born.

In between all the birthday celebrations I had my flag day and got assigned to Ukraine! It was the best present we all could get, because it means that Randy and I will be in the same country for our next tour!

Thankful – By Miral

This Thanksgiving i had a lot to be thankful for!

I am thankful to have my cousin twin Lauren who really gets me.

And I am very thankful that we are so close this year.

I am thankful Aunt Das has room on her lap for three babies.

I am thankful for my two big brothers (even if I don’t look it here).

I am thankful Grandma made Malcolm’s turkey and I got to eat all the candy that fell on the floor. I am mostly kidding.

I am thankful that both my grandmas have come to visit us so much!

I am thankful my mom makes us take group photos that end up like this.

I am thankful Laurel. Aunt Das and Uncle Nooj came to have a fun Thanksgiving dinner with us.

I am thankful that Uncle Nooj was there to keep these two entertained I had my mom all to myself.

Well almost, but that’s ok. I don’t mind sharing with this cute face.

I am thankful this one knows how to relax after a big Thanksgiving meal.

I am most thankful for all our friends and family near and far that love us so much! We wish we were with all of them for Thanksgiving!

Limits

Just a week after we arrived in the U.S. we were lucky enough to have this guy visit us.

I love many things about Randy but one thing I really love is how he pushes me to do more than I ever think I can do and oh how he loves a packed day.  It’s also amazing how much easier it is to move three kids around (with no car) with an extra person!

Day two of his visit we piled the kids into Grandma Gertch’s car and headed to our old neighborhood in Capital Hill. This was one of Randy’s great ideas. We don’t know our new neighborhood in Rosslyn verywell so going to Capital Hill was perfect.  We headed to Ted’s Bulletin, this yummy breakfast place we used to go to when Adam was just a baby and we lived in Capital Hill.

This one was all googly eyes for daddy!  It’s like they never spend any apart.  It really is amazing what a strong bond they have!

Then we went to a park near our old home that we used to take Adam to all the time when he was a a baby.

Look how much he’s grown!

And these two were but distant twinkles in our eyes back then!

Here they all are in front of our old house!

Here is another example of a day that I would NEVER have even thought of on my own.  We went to meet some people from my training class at the Natural History Museum. Everyone loved it.

This is where I would have gone home, but Randy suggested we go to lunch. Despite one meltdown where Adam refused to sit at our table for the first tent minutes (I can’t remember why…) it went spendidly once everyone got some french fries.

After that we even went shopping! Miral slept the entire time and Randy was able to get this amazing sweater.

After this big day I would have gone home and called it a day…but Randy was SO excited about the Knicks playing in DC and he wanted to go to the game with us.  A game that started at 7 pm.  On Day Light savings day when 7 was really 8!!  Against my better judgment I agreed, because I knew Randy really wanted to go AND I knew that the boys would love it AND I knew that no matter what happened he would help me and everything would be fine. And this right here is why no matter what Randy suggests, even if I think it’s crazy, I agree- because he is right there with me and almost always it it fantastic.  And boy was he right about this one.  We took the metro to the game and the boys loved it!

We got snacks and popcorn and the game was super fun!

Here is another fun day that I fought – see a trend here- I am always wrong and we should always just do what Randy wants (don’t tell him- we’ll find out if he actually reads these.)  We met our friends there and it was one of the last warm days of the year and tons of fun.

We all can’t wait until Randy is back in DC with us so we can have more adventures!  I am missing my limit pushing partner tons!!

A Gekko, a cobra and an owl

This Halloween was the first one ever for the kids in the U.S. It was pretty exciting. Instead of just one little weird building party, there were parties at school, real life trick or treating outside on a real block and celebrating in the U.S.
The boys picked their costumes and Malcolm chose to be Gekko from PJ Masks and Adam chose to be a cobra. Miral chose to be an owl….or maybe that was the cutest costume Target had available.

Aumt Das, Uncle Nooj and Laurel came to see us and brought Miral a super cute costume. Laurel and Miral got to be Rockford Peaches from A League of Their Own.

We also got to carve our pumpkins we got at the pumpkin patch.

We even got to decorate a gingerbread house that Grandma brought! That’s right Grandma was visiting too!

On Halloween we went Trick or Treating with our friends in a great neighborhood. Everyone was hanging out on their porches and their were kids everywhere. It was wonderful!

US of A

Oh boy am I behind…but I’m currently on furlough- not working during the shutdown and have time to try to catch up on life. So here we are. Way back to when we arrived in October it was a crazy time. We were all excited to be in the U.S. but with me in full time training to join the Foreign Service, both boys starting a new school and everyone getting used to wearing scarves and gloves there was a lot on all of our plates.
But first the amazing view from my window. Our apartment here is one the State Department gave us and its pretty small and unremarkable but man on man do I love this view!
I also love seeing this cutie and all my cuties in winter gear. It’s such a novelty for us!

We had a lot of work to do to make our new apartment comfy. I had promised the boys bunk beds so we spent the first week settling in and building Ikea furniture. Thankfully I had this guy to help me build.

The highlight of our first weekend in our home was getting to actually pick out a pumpkin from a farm for the first time! In Manila we would usually just go to the one supermarket that would sell 30 dollar pumpkins….

But it was a super cold day and the Alis have some thin skin!

But we still had fun and both Grandmas were there to spend the day with us.

We got to explore CVS and all it has to offer.

Then it was off to one of the beautiful playgrounds in Virginia.

Adam started Arlington Science Focus and had great start to first grade in the U.S.

And Malcolm started Arlington Children’s Center.

Moving on

While most people in the Foreign Service have some time to move, sometimes you don’t know when you’re moving. I knew I may be called to join the foreign service but when I got the email in September, earlier than I expected, especially with the recent hiring freezes, I was shocked. BUT this was three years in the making, a large reason why Randy was in Pakistan and something we have been working towards. So after much discussion, we decided it was best for the family for me to join. This meant that I would be moving to Washington DC, three weeks after our already planned trip to Oman, without Randy…..

What does one do you ask to prepare for an international move in three weeks after being in the same country for six years….

Figure out which toys should come with you to DC for a year

Off we go!

A short 24 hours later we were back in the good old US of A to live for the first time in almost six years! Our time in the Philippines was amazing, we left with a one year old and arrived not knowing anyone. We are left with a 6, 4 and 1 year old and so many amazing friends and experience. It was an amazing 6 years and a wonderful first tour. I am going to miss so many things about the Philippines but we were pretty lucky to have six years there. That is longer than most Foreign Service officers get, so on to the next adventure!

Middle East Reunion

Two weeks after I got the call that I was invited to join the next foreign service class of officers we had a planned trip to Oman. The plan was for me to put the kids on a plane, fly them to Oman and meet Randy there. We were going to stay with our good friends who has moved to Oman from Manila last year. I was really excited for the boys to see Ben and Zoe again and to start realizing that when friends move away or you move away it isn’t goodbye forever, it’s just goodbye for now. And when you see your friends again, it’s like you never said goodbye and you pick up right where you left off.
But first, I had to get through a 9 hour day flight with these three sweet faces alone….

I was just a teeny bit afraid but in the end it was great. The boys were amazing! And Miral was a superstar, well a one year old superstar. She wanted to walk around and smile at everyone and everyone was more than willing to oblige. I mean how can you not smile at that face.

We were so excited to see Naomi and Julian. As I explained to Adam, with good friends it was like no time had passed and we all picked up right where we had left off.

And it was the same for these little peanuts. They all clicked again right away and watching them play together and seeing them pick up where they left off made me realize that this lifestyle is the right one for our family.
As each tour ends and we are forced to leave, we will have friends in one more corner of the world and the same goes for our kids. By the time they are adults, they will have lived all over the world and have friends in so many corners of the world.

Oman is only three hours behind Manila, but this little one KNEW and was up three hours earlier than normal, which brings us to 3:30 a.m…..but we made the best of it and how can you not smile at this face.
The next morning started with some cat play, as did every morning in Oman. It was hard to tell who loved the car more, Malcolm or Miral.

After an early morning wakeup and cat play, we headed to the Muscat fish marker.

Then it was onto the Muscat market. Randy and I had visited Oman over 12 years ago. It was a little bit surreal to go back after all that time, now married (I remember I had worn a fake wedding band before we were married,  so people in Oman wouldn’t be upset we were sharing hotel rooms unmarried), with three kids!  The market was exactly how I remembered it.  The only difference was that we had these three little amazing people who were now experiencing all of these things with us.

After a few days in Oman we headed out to Jabal Akbar to this amazing hotel, Alila. This was another moment of when travels just seem so amazing and surreal. We arrived at this beautiful hotel on this mountaintop and had the most amazing visit.  We all loved being up there!

This place also had an amazing pool that was enjoyed by all!

All aspects of pool life was enjoyed!

The next morning we had a long breakfast with the kids spending the whole time exploring, with the most amazing view.

The next day we headed down from the mountain and headed into the dessert. Randy and I had been to the dessert once before in Oman and it was amazing. But for me, this time was so much more amazing.
I am a very nervous off road driver. Being in a pickup driven by friends automatically made me more comfortable. Once we were up there to be confronted with the most majestic sunset one can ever witness juxtaposed with our children playing on the top of a sand dune was the most magical moment of the entire trip and one of the most amazing travel moments I’ve ever had.

Another amazing perk was camel rides for all!

Another great perk was that Adam is finally old enough to babysit. I like to call him my Sunday nanny 🙂

The next morning Julian’s truck got stuck.

Luckily the hotel sent this guy to get us out…and he did!

We headed back to Muscat for some relaxation and hanging out, which included reading books, shopping in the non Muslim supermarket section and the exploring beach which is amazing!

Adam and Ben went with Naomi and Randy to swim with whale sharks which they loved!

I stayed home with the little ones and prepared for Randy’s birthday party.

I didn’t mind so much since this was my amazing lunch! My ultimate lunch right here!

Oh, I also had these cute faces.

While in Oman we got to celebrate Randy’s birthday.

We had an amazing brunch at home.  We hung out with the kids and then headed out to an amazing dinner at the Chedi.  Randy and I had stayed there when we visited Oman so it was nostalgic to go back to this amazing seafood restaurant.

The next day we squeezed in some more exploring beach time.

For our last day we set the bar high. We headed to the Shang for the day and we all loved it! But first more cat time, like every day!

A mere 9 hour flight later we were back in Manila. but with the most amazing memories!

Taipei 101

I’m months behind on my life…but leaving Manila, starting a new career in the foreign service and still having a husband in Pakistan will do that….so lets go back to August.

During Randy’s last trip to Manila we were able to squeeze in a quick trip to Taiwan with the kids. It’s always been one of those places that we wanted to check out but never made it to the top of the list. It ended up being a great trip! The food was fantastic! We stayed at a great hotel and we were able to see so much! So many of the sites were kid friendly and the boys are at an age where they get really into sightseeing. They LOVED Tapei 101, the tallest building in Asia. We went to the top the first day and they spent the rest of the trip spotting it in the distance.

Tea Party

For Miral’s first birthday we had a tea party. Did you expect anything different 🙂 It was a lot of fun to plan and because there were a lot of older siblings coming we had slime, basketball, and arts and crafts too. I loved celebrating a year of my Miral. Randy was here for the party and we celebrated with all of our friends in Manila.
